SOURCE Report:
On January 9, 2025, a Cessna 525 CitationJet CJ1+ (registration PR-GFS, manufactured in 2008) experienced a runway excursion at Ubatuba Airport (UBT/SDUB), São Paulo, Brazil, during its landing phase. The aircraft, operated privately and carrying five occupants, overshot runway 09, crossed a road, and came to rest on the beach at Praia do Cruzeiro, where it caught fire. Weather conditions at the time were poor, with rain and a wet runway, which contributed to the accident.

The pilot, Paulo Seghetto, originally from Goiânia, was extricated from the wreckage but succumbed to cardiac arrest despite resuscitation efforts. The four other occupants—a couple, Mireylle Fries and Bruno Almeida Souza, along with their two children—were rescued alive and transported to the hospital in stable condition. Additionally, two individuals on the beach sustained injuries: a woman with a fracture and a child. Both were treated by emergency services. The concessionaire Rede VOA, which operates the airport, confirmed these injuries.

The Ubatuba Airport runway measures 940 meters in length, with the first 380 meters closed for landing operations, leaving 560 meters available for use. The Cessna 525 requires a minimum landing distance of 789 meters under standard conditions, according to the manufacturer. The wet runway and adverse weather significantly impacted the aircraft’s landing performance.

Initial reports from the local government mistakenly stated that two fatalities occurred, later correcting this to confirm only the pilot’s death. Video footage captured the aircraft exiting the aerodrome, crossing the road adjacent to the beach, and coming to rest on the sand while on fire.

Emergency response involved five fire department vehicles and 12 personnel. The Civil Defense reported extensive activity to contain the situation and rescue survivors. According to ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil), the aircraft was certified as airworthy but was not authorized for commercial air taxi operations at the time of the accident. The runway excursion is under investigation by the Brazilian Air Force’s CENIPA (Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents). The agency has begun its standard data collection and damage assessment procedures. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
