A private Bombardier BD-100 Challenger 300 (registration LV-GOK) belonging to the Brito family, crashed on Wednesday at noon at San Fernando International Airport while arriving from Punta del Este. The aircraft failed to effectively brake upon landing on Runway 05, veered off the runway, breached the perimeter fence, and collided with a nearby house. The two crew members, pilot Martín Fernández Loza (44) and co-pilot Agustín Orforte (35), died instantly. Firefighters and Airport Security Police (PSA) responded quickly, extinguishing the fire and evacuating residents of the affected homes. Fortunately, no additional casualties were reported.
The official PSA report confirmed the aircraft overshot the runway around 1:20 PM, causing a significant explosion upon impact. The plane had been operated by New Lines SA and was used earlier that day to transport passengers to Punta del Este before the pilots’ return flight. The incident caused property damage and fires in nearby houses, generating panic among local residents. Investigators, led by Federal Court No. 1 under Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado, are working to determine the causes of the crash.
The Challenger 300 belonged to the prominent Brito family, owners of Banco Macro. Jorge Horacio Brito, who served as the bank’s CEO from 1985 until his death in 2020 due to a helicopter accident, originally acquired the firm. His son, Jorge Pablo Brito, assumed the presidency of Banco Macro in 2023 and is also serving as president of River Plate. The crash, while devastating, is a stark reminder of aviation safety challenges, particularly during landing operations.
